The photographs were taken at the Hikuri ceremony, which was held on the night from Saturday to Sunday. Hikuri – that is what the Marakame themselves call this ceremony, not peyote, as is commonly believed. We were not allowed to film what happened during the ceremony itself, but they let us capture what took place at its beginning and end.

In these shots, the beginning of the ceremony, its preparation. The bonfire is arranged in a special way – near the fire itself, beside it, the Marakame draw symbolic images with coals, which, I assume, are specific motifs from their cultural heritage.

The Marakame themselves are dressed in traditional white costumes with red embroidered patterns in the form of double-headed eagles, and ornate wide-brimmed sombreros.

Around the fire, along the stones, their musical instruments are warming up – drums and tambourines. Being Marakame and Perakame, they must know how to sing and play some kind of instruments.

And they performed all night long, they did it very sensually, soulfully, vividly. With their performance, they touched the hearts of the ceremony participants, plucking deep strings of the soul, something human, earthly, and I still feel this effect.
